Racism and Borders

Despite claims about globalization, we see increasing surveillance, tightened restrictions and growing punitive regimes at international borders. This critical collection examines processes of racialization in relation to border regulations and restrictions. It analyses border controls, racism, and representations of race, within multinational contexts as aspects of neo-liberal governance. It also looks at means by which people resist or challenge racialization. This collection uses the lenses of sociology, criminology, art, literary criticism and political science to critically examine varied processes of racialization, criminalization and resistance in relation to borders with reference to multi-national contexts in the current period. .

Memory Evolutive Systems

Memory Evolutive Systems
$175.00

The theory of Memory Evolutive Systems represents a mathematical model for natural open self-organizing systems, such as biological, sociological or neural systems. In these systems, the dynamics are modulated by the cooperative and/or competitive interactions between the global system and a net of internal Centers of Regulation (CR) wich a differential access to a central heirarchical Memory. The MES proposes a mathematical model for autonomous evolutionary systems and is based on the Category Theory of mathematics. It provides a framework to study and possibly simulate the structre of "living systems" and their dynamic behavior. MES explores what characterizes a complex evolutionary system, what distinguishes it from inanimate physical systems, its functioning and evolution in time, from its birth to its death. The behavior of this type of system depends heavily on its former experiences, and a model representing the system over a period of time, could anticipate later behavior and perhaps even predict some evolutionary alternatives. The role of the MES model will be two-fold: theoretical, for a comprehension of a fundamental nature and practical, for applications in biology, medicine, sociology, ecology, economy, meteorology, and other sciences. Key Features: *Comprehensive and comprehensible coverage of Memory Evolutive System *Written by the developers of the Memory Evolutive Systems *Designed to explore the common language between sciences

Cosmos

Cosmos
$7.99

This visually stunning book with over 250 full-color illustrations, many of them never before published, is based on Carl Sagan’s thirteen-part television series. Told with Sagan’s remarkable ability to make scientific ideas both comprehensible and exciting, Cosmos is about science in its broadest human context, how science and civilization grew up together. The book also explores spacecraft missions of discovery of the nearby planets, the research in the Library of ancient Alexandria, the human brain, Egyptian hieroglyphics, the origin of life, the death of the Sun, the evolution of galaxies and the origins of matter, suns and worlds. Sagan retraces the fifteen billion years of cos-mic evolution that have transformed matter into life and consciousness, enabling the Cosmos to wonder about itself. He considers the latest findings on life elsewhere and how we might communicate with the beings of other worlds. Cosmos is the story of our long journey of discovery and the forces and individuals who helped to shape modern science, including Democritus, Hypatia, Kepler, Newton, Huy-gens, Champollion, Lowell and Humason. Sagan looks at our planet from an extra-terrestrial vantage point and sees a blue jewel-like world, inhabited by a lifeform that is just beginning to discover its own unity and to ven-ture into the vast ocean of space.
